2018 Honda Accord: Six Of One, But Not Six Of The Other – Manual Stays, V6 Goes
Long known for its sporty appeal, a rare-seen trait in the mid-sized sedan class, the Honda Accord has been a favorite of car owners looking for a responsible way to feed their need for speed. News from Car and Driver is that Honda will be revealing an all-new 2018 Honda Accord later this year making a 10-generation in the model’s history. What do we know so far? For one, there’s a new engine being offered – the former V6 will be replaced with a new turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-four. We have confirmation that it will use the same block as the new Civic Type R but with different hardware – so owners can use regular gas.
Honda is also said to be offering a hybrid version with an updated setup of the current version that will deliver 212 HP and 49/47 mpg city/highway. As for the transmission, look for a six-speed manual available on the 1.5 and 2.0 turbo engines but not on the hybrid. Alternatively, owners can choose the optional CVT and a 10-speed automatic on the 1.5 and 2.0 engines. Don’t expect the Accord’s turbo to equal the Civic Type R’s which delivers 316 horsepower.
With the current Accord V6 bringing 278 horsepower we expect the premium 2018 engine option to deliver around 300 horsepower. All said, we’re glad to see Honda keeping the manual transmission option open for drivers that enjoy the control but we won’t deny we’re sorry to see the V6 go though we aren’t surprised as many other rivals in the class have already moved away from the V6 engine configs (i.e., Chevy’s Malibu, the Hyundai Sonata and Kia Optima) The 2018 Honda Accord will be assembled at Honda’s Marysville, Ohio facility and we expect more information to be made available throughout the summer.
