Details have emerged for the 2018 Ford Mustang GT and it’s clear that Ford is banking on new upgrades to help maintain their pony’s position in the stable of American muscle car history. Thanks to an improved 10-speed automatic transmission and new “drag strip” mode, the 2018 Ford Mustang GT is expected to reach 60 mph in less than 4 seconds which should be enough speed and power for any red-blooded driver on the road today. This new transmission mode “optimizes torque, transmission and newly available custom-designed Michelin Pilot Sport 4 S tires to deliver maximum acceleration and performance in straight-line driving” according to Ford. Obviously, no one is expecting the Mustang to compete off the line against Dodge’s Challenger Demon with over 800 hp, but the Mustang is still no slough.
The 2018 Ford Mustang includes four other driving modes in addition to “drag strip” which include normal, sport, track and snow/wet. The transmission utilized 10 speeds and is able to up – and down – shift faster than previous models. Ford also stated the transmission will be able to skip gears when necessary. Paddle shifters will allow drivers to manually control the gear shifting.
The company has made some additional improvements to their 5.0-liter Coyote V8 engine, including new dual-fuel, high-pressure direct injection and low-pressure port injection. This change gives the Mustang a 25-hp increase to 460 hp overall, which puts it above Chevy’s Camaro SS at just 455 hp.
For those more fuel conscious drivers, the EcoBoost Mustang won’t leave you hanging as it too will include the drag strip mode. The four-cylinder turbo engine is still at 310 hp but will have an addition 30 lb-ft (bringing the total to 350 lb-ft). Ford boasts the EcoBoost will hit 60 mph in just five seconds. We’ll have to see what the tale of the track tells when the time comes.
You won’t see the 2018 Ford Mustang in showrooms until later this fall but as of today, July 25th, you can start building and pricing your 2018 Ford Mustang. Pricing for the 2018 Ford Mustang starts at $26,485 for the EcoBoost fastback coupe with 6-speed manual transmission — $400 more than last year’s V-6. Pricing for the 2018 Ford Mustang GT starts at $35,995 (a $1,900 increase from 2017).
