Two men died during a high-speed test drive of a 2016 Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat at Central Colorado Regional Airport in Buena Vista.
The Chaffee County Sheriff’s Office received a call regarding the crash around 12:30 Friday afternoon. The vehicle wreckage was located approximately 650 feet from the south end of the runway. Both occupants were reported dead on scene.
According to investigators, two men were test driving the 2016 Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat with permission from the airport. The occupants were identified as 71-year-old Lynd Fitzgerald of Colorado Springs and 76-year-old Roger Lichtenberger from San Marcos, California.
Fitzgerald was driving at a high rate of speed down the runway and proceeded an additional 314 feet before the vehicle went airborne over a ravine. The car impacted and then went airborne again before flipping end over end over another ravine before coming to rest.
They were just test driving this car … They went a little too fast. I don’t want to surmise. … They probably got to the end of the runway and, at that speed, didn’t realize they were there so fast. And they lost control. It was just too high a speed and they got to the end of the runway.”

The Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat 707 hp engine. In 2018, Dodge will release the 2018 Dodge Challenger SRT Demon with an 840 hp engine. It is capable of doing 0-60 in 2.3 second and reaching the quarter-mile in 9.65 at more than 140 mph.
