Old School Off Road Goes High Tech
You’ve probably already seen the camo’d prototypes and leaked image renderings of Jeep’s new Wrangler but thanks to new pictures of the interior, we now know what to expect.
The Jeep Wrangler is the heart and soul of the brand and the market’s reception will set the tone for the entire lineup. While the Wrangler’s off-road pedigree puts it in the echelon of elites, it’s low-grade interior has been a bane for drivers who’ve grown accustomed to the convenience of modern technologies. The question becomes: can Jeep manage to update and upgrade the interior of the Wranger without impacting the rugged soul of the vehicle that Jeep owners cherish?
The prototype spied features manual transmission. An eight-speed automatic is sure to be available as well as six-speed manual. We’re also expecting a turbocharged 2.0-liter “Hurricane” inline-four engine.
The 2018 Jeep Wrangler will feature Fiat Chrysler’s Uconnect. An easy-to-operate and quick-to-respond infotainment system. We’re unable to confirm screen size but expect top-end models to measure out at 8+ inches.
Under the screen, the Jeep’s climate and audio controls are placed for easy access and control. You’ll also notice this jeep has parking-assist sensors as well as engine stop/start and a heated steering wheel – a nice touch for those of us in wintery climes.
Window switches in the same location as previous years confirm the Wrangler’s doors will continue to be removable. Surrounding the switches are a 12-volt charging port and “media” door containing USB ports.
Despite its embrace of new tech, the Wrangler will maintain the old-school mojo with a broad and flat dash and traditional circular air vents as well as an easy-to-reach dash-mounted grab handle, and a sublime, retro-inspired three-spoke steering wheel.
Using aluminum to lighten the weight, the body-on-frame construction and solid axles at both ends are all but given – as well as both two and four-door body styles and the much-hyped pickup version.
The 2018 Jeep launches with a 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6 under the hood with a four-wheel-drive system with a manually operated transfer case.
